How to become an Air Traffic Controller in the FAA

Image
FAA air traffic control hiring It seems good paying, stable jobs that still promise a pension are almost non existent.  Working for the FAA as an air traffic controller is still one of the few careers that offers good benefits, great pay, and a mandatory retirement at 56 years old, with a pension. As a young person interested in the military, you may be looking ahead at the rest of your life. Maybe you don't want to spend 20 years in the military; maybe you'll do one term, have some adventure and move on. Although signing up for Air Force special warfare does not guarantee a Combat Control spot, it still seems like you get a little input of career choice you want after the selection process is finished.  If you do at least one term as an Combat Controller, then  air traffic control may be a good career choice for you to settle down after your enlistment.  I want to explain how you get hired by the FAA for anyone interested after the military, or for anyone wanting a...

Swimming in the CCT pipeline Tips on how to prepare

Below are a few tips on how to prepare for swimming as a CCT, PJ, or Special Recon trainee  Does swimming in the pipeline concern you?   Maybe you plan on doing the Air Force side of special ops because you don't want to live in the ocean like a Navy Frogman. Although swimming is not the main focus of an Air Force operator, you must become a proficient swimmer.  It's one of of the many things you must be able to do in these "jack of all trades" career fields. It's probably no surprise to anyone interested in these jobs that you become a trained combat diver in your journey to become an operator, which means spending a lot of time in the water. What to focus on before entering training I have some good news to those who may be concerned about becoming a good swimmer in the pipeline.  For me, it was my only real worry, besides jumping out of airplanes)  The swimming in the pipeline wasn't bad at all. When I say it's not that bad, I mean swimming 1500 meters,...

Simple guide for push ups, pull ups, and sit ups in the Air Force special warfare pipeline

Image
Keep your physical training simple by using pyramids Click  here for a simple running guide.  To become a PT animal, read below One thing I was really good at during my time in combat control training was physical training.  Other than rucking , I showed up for the training in the best possible shape I could have been. Although I'm not an expert, I feel comfortable sharing information to future candidates about how to prepare for this type of training.  Because the information about the pipeline was pretty lousy when I entered training, back in 2005, I was able to share some of my knowledge with some guys before we started the CCT orientation course.   Some guys were in over their head because all they focused on was passing the PAST test, and didn't really know much else about the rest of the course. I've learned a lot more since that time. One guy, who happened to be in good shape, did a sit up session with me a few days before the start of the co...

Air Force special warfare assessment and selection ( A&S) : 5 tips to get selected

What is the Assessment and Selection? ( A&S) There has been a big change in the Air Force special warfare pipeline since I went through it.  There is now a phase in the beginning known as the assessment and selection, or A&S. You may have heard about this.  Gone are the days of a pipeline designed to build   you up before crushing you at Combat Control school.  Pararescue and Special Recon, or S&R ( formerly known as Combat Weather, are also seeing this major change.   Even the old Pararescue Indoctrination has gone away. The Combat Weather pipeline was pretty much just winging it.  They shared a lot of the combat control pipeline, but the pipeline order or location of schools could be vastly different from person to person. I've gotten questions about this new phase like: Do I think they've made it easier?  Did they change it around because females are allowed to enter the training?  What happens at A & S? I guess the ...

Deciding to join Air Force special warfare; consider the 10 year trend

Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next. Gilda Radner Should you try Air Force special warfare? If you are having a hard time deciding whether or not to give special warfare a shot, consider somethings I've learned about trying to plan out your life when you're young What we want now may not be what we want 10 years from now For people in their thirties, forties, and beyond, where they currently are, is not necessarily what they wanted be 10 years before. Sometimes we know what we want in our lives.  Actually, let me rephrase that.  Sometimes we think we know what we want.  We think we know what we want our careers to be.  We think we know what we want out of life and our futures. When I was younger, I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do with my life.  I looked at the people that had a plan with envy and feelings of inadequacy in my own life.    I real...
